Late Rally Not Enough, Green Sox drop opener 7-6
The Green Sox left the tying and winning runs on base in the ninth and left the tying runs on base in the 8th. It was indicative of the day the team had. They dropped the season opener to the Cricket W……s, 7-6, because, all day, the big hits just weren't coming. Despite putting 20 (12 hits, 2 BB, HBP and 5 ROE) runners on base, the team was only able to cash in for 6 runs while striking out 13 times.
On the flip side, the pitching staff was strong all day. They allowed only 5 hits and 2 BB (although they had 3 HBP) while striking out 12. Only two of the runs were earned because of 7 errors, most of which were a by-product of a crazy swirling wind that effected the game for both teams. Chris Hackett (3+IP, 3H, 2K,2 ER, 2BB, 6R), in his first start for the Green Sox in 4 years, was strong for the first three before tiring in the 4th after being victimized by errors and wind. Jason Ganley (3IP, 2K, 2H,HBP, 0 R), making his Green Sox debut, was impressive. He came on in relief and stopped the rally in the fourth and pitched 2 more shut out frames. Jason Gnerre (3 IP, 7 K, 1 R, 0 ER, 2HBP), despite giving up a run ( after hitting the leadoff batter with 2 strikes, then scoring on a stolen base, wild pitch and passed ball) dominated, striking out 7. It was a strong return to the hill for Gnerre, after a 5 year layoff.
Offensively, the team was lead by the veterans. Lonnie Conaway (2-5, 2R, 2RBI), Scott Mess (2-3, 2R, 2BB, SB) Haakon Stepperud (2-5, R, RBI,2B) and Rob Mess (2-4. RBI) each had two hits each. Andy Espinoza (1-4) and Ted Barlow (1-2) each collected their first hit of their Green Sox career and Larry Rivers reached base and scored after being hit by a pitch (or "Dorned") in the 9th.
Despite the loss, the Green Sox never stopped fighting and put themselves in a position to win the game in the end. With the deep and talented pitching staff and a host of strong hitters that will heat up, the Sox are looking good despite dropping a tough opener. Next week: the defending league champion MudCats (0-1) at 9am on Lincoln High School field. Go Green Sox!

Opening Day Sunday!

Welcome to the 9th season of Boulder Green Sox Baseball! This Sunday, April 12th, the team begins it's second campaign in the 35W division in the Denver NABA. The Sox will take the field at 12:30 against the corporate backed Cricket W------s. The Green Sox will feature some new faces this season on the diamond as well as the return of some familiar old friends. Jason Ganley, pitcher and outfielder, was the team's pick in this year's league draft, 2nd taken overall. Andy Espinoza brings some much needed depth at the catcher position as will Larry Rivers, who will see plenty of time in the rebuilt outfield. Ted Barlow brings some speed and experience in center and Efrain Torres will round out a strong new outfield crew.
Eric Bopp has played a couple of games with the team in the past and the southpaw will be toeing the rubber on a more regular basis in 2015. Jason Gnerre, who had a cameo last season, returns from the left coast to play short and to help pitch the Green Sox to a championship berth, as he did in the second season before he moved to San Diego. And original Green Sox Chris Hackett returns after a 4 year hiatus in New England and adds quality the lineup and the mound.
The returning veterans are a strong group, happy for the talented reinforcements. Reif Faulkner, Hakaakon Stepperud, Gabe Helgerson and Lonnie Conaway all return for a 2nd season, as will Chuck Federico after his stint on the "disabled list". The Messyman aka Scott Mess and Rob Mess, along with their father Coach Mike Mess are all back for a 9th season. This will be their first without brother Gary, who is working for MLB on the east coast this year and playing ball for a team outside of Philedelphia.
The Green Sox are looking forward to another great campaign as they try to win a title! it all starts this Sunday. Go Green Sox!!!

Strong Scrimmage with the Spartans

It was a perfect day for baseball at Here to Play Field in Denver, the sky was blue and it was 75 degrees. The Green Sox and Spartans combined to scrimmage as they prepare for the 2015 season. Despite tired legs and sore arms, the Sox looked strong offensively, led by newcomer Jason Ganley, who went deep to the opposite field in right. He followed that up with a triple. They were his first AB's in 10 years! Ganley also pitched 3 innings and did well despite the long lay-off. Defensively, the team struggled a bit, reflective of not having much outdoor practice time. Still, there were some plays made and Jason Gnerre looked particularly strong in the middle infield and Reif Faulker played a solid left. Chris Hackett return to the team with a dominate turn, sitting down all 5 batters he faced, including a pair of strikeouts. Messyman bridged the gap, getting the team out of a jam in the third before being lifted for Hack with 1 out in the 4th. Rob Mess caught all five while Lonnie Conway, who had a nice opposite field hit, moved around, playing the corner infield spots and center. New papa Haakin Stepperud looked good all day, reflective of the way the offense performed.
While there is much more work to be done to be ready for the opener, today was a great help toward getting ready for the '15 Green Sox run at the league championship!
